Clear-Coating the Sails

Painted Wings

The sails could have been used as is, but to protect them from dirt and possibly a little UV, I sprayed them with clear polyurethane. This particular paint is PPG DU-1000.

This was a miserably hot sweaty job done in my garage on a sweltering July day, with a half dead air compressor and an old beat up paint gun. On my "Fun" scale it's somewhere in the negative numbers.

As you can see from the reflections, the paint came out pretty well considering the working conditions, but I highly recommend if you ever have to do this that you beg, borrow, or steal a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) paint system. I sure wish I'd had one.

Also, this paint is really toxic to breathe, so you're going to need a forced-air breather system. I built one from scratch using a filter mask and a small forced-air furnace fan connected by lots of tubing. Do yourself a favor and rent or buy a commercial system. Mine lasted about 3/4 of the way through the process, then fell apart. I spent the rest of the time with a filter mask, holding my breath as much as possible, and dashing outside for fresh air.
